Why More People Are Choosing Fitness Communities Over Bars and Restaurants
It seems like over the last few years the fitness industry has been pushing us toward one of two extremes.
On one side, there's the get strong crowd. The before-and-afters. The body checks. The endless pursuit of looking a certain way.
On the other side, there's been a growing movement away from results altogether. Community-first. Highly aesthetic studios. Just move your body. No pressure. No goals. Just vibes.
Somewhere along the way, it started feeling like you had to choose.
Care about results? You're obsessed with aesthetics.
Care about community? Results shouldn't matter it’s your safe space.
But why are those the only options?
In 2026, Bloomberg reported that Gen-Z is increasingly using gyms and fitness spaces as social hubs, choosing them over bars, clubs, and even some traditional social gatherings. People aren't just looking for a workout anymore. They're looking for connection, routine, belonging, and experiences that fit into their lives.
Honestly, that makes a lot of sense.
We're more connected online than ever, yet many people feel more isolated than they did a decade ago. Adult friendships are harder. Schedules are packed. Community doesn't happen automatically anymore.
So if fitness is becoming one of the places where people go to connect, meet people, and build relationships, then I think we're asking the wrong question.
The question isn't whether community belongs in fitness.
The question is:
Why can't the workout work, too?
WE'RE MORE CONNECTED THAN EVER, BUT SOMEHOW MORE ISOLATED
I don’t know about you, but even as a fit pro I spend a lot of my days staring at a screen. A lot of us work remotely, we text instead of call, and we like Instragram stories of people we don’t even know or talk to.
We tell our friends "we should get together soon" and then realize three months have passed.
Making friends as an adult is weird. Building community as an adult is even weirder. Which is why fitness has quietly become one of the few places left where people regularly see the same group of people every week.
And eventually those repeated interactions become conversations.
Conversations become friendships.
And suddenly you have people in your corner that support your goals and lifestyle without ever intending to.
THE WORKOUT STILL HAS TO WORK
Here's where a lot of fitness spaces lose me. Some communities are amazing. You can tell the energy is high and there’s a sense of “belonging”. But the workout? Not so much.
Everyone is having a great time, but nobody is progressing. The challenge is exchanged for conversation and at some point, the whole reason you started showing up gets lost.
On the flip side, there are plenty of places that deliver a great workout but make you feel completely anonymous. You walk in, you work out, you leave. But nobody knows your name, when you’re missing for a week, or what you’re working towards.
The workout might be effective, but the experience feels… empty.
The sweet spot is somewhere in the middle.
PEOPLE STAY WHERE THEY FEEL CHALLENGED AND KNOWN
Think about the places you've stayed the longest. Rooting for a sports team (hello, Go Lions), a gym, a job, a hobby.
Usually it isn't because one thing was perfect. It's because you felt connected to the people and the experience.
Fitness works the same way. People are more likely to stay consistent when they feel supported.
They're more likely to push harder when they trust the coach.
They're more likely to keep showing up when someone notices they're there.
Not because they need accountability (and hey, maybe you do). Because humans need other human interaction and support to thrive in life.
THAT'S THE GOAL
At Core (LP), we're not trying to build a room full of strangers who happen to be exercising next to each other. We're also not interested in being a social club that happens to have workout equipment.
We want both.
A workout rooted in strength, progression, mobility, and coaching.
And a fitness community where people actually know each other.
Because community is great.
Results are better.
And you shouldn't have to choose between the two.
READY TO EXPERIENCE BOTH?
Core (LP) offers Pilates-inspired strength training, private training, semi-private sessions, and small group fitness classes in Berkley & Rochester Hills. If you're looking for a workout that challenges you and a community you'll actually want to come back to, we'd love to meet you.
