GLP-1s, “Quick Fix” Culture, and Why Lasting Change Still Comes from Muscle

As a kid who grew up in the 90s, I can sadly say this: chasing “skinny” and a very specific physical aesthetic is back.

GLP-1s. Vibration plates. Walking pads. Detox routines. High-protein everything. Low-impact everything, “soft Pilates era”…you name it, there’s a new “fix” daily. But underneath all of it is rooted in the same goal.

Listen, who doesn’t want to get results faster? But the hard truth sis is that there is zero pill or plate that can speed up muscle and a healthy metabolism. Muscle is the one thing in your life you cannot buy, you have to build.

WHY THIS CYCLE KEEPS COMING BACK

Each decade this shows up in a new form. As early as the 60s, we saw speed advertised as “diet pills”. In the 90s everything was “low fat” yet fats are key to brain cognition. In the 2000s, we saw “low carb” and ketosis when again, carbs give our bodies the energy it needs to function. Now we see this in high protein diets, hormone imbalance, “cortisol spiking workout” conversations, vibration plates, and the ever so popular GLP-1s.

The packaging changes every decade, but the psychology around it doesn’t. But here’s the reality, regardless of what era you grew up in we’re being sold the idea that “skinny” by any means necessary is healthy…and that’s just not the case.

WHAT OUR BODY NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY

Your body will always respond best with sleep, water, nutrition, low stress, and a healthy fitness routine. It needs resistance, time under tension, ways to progress, recover, and be consistent over time!

This is when you build lean muscle, boost your metabolism, feel less stiff in your joints and have better mental health and energy. It becomes like brushing your teeth. The thing you do all the time because, that’s when we feel our best. And when we feel our best, everything else follows.

GLP-1S AREN'T THE VILLAIN

Before anyone comes for me, this isn't an anti-GLP-1 article. Many people have had incredible success with GLP-1 medications. For some, they've helped improve health markers, manage chronic conditions, and create momentum where they previously felt stuck.

The issue is when we start believing that weight loss and health are the same thing.

Because they aren't.

A smaller body doesn't automatically mean a stronger body. A lower number on the scale doesn't automatically mean better mobility, better balance, more energy, stronger bones, or more muscle.

The goal isn't just losing weight. The goal is being able to carry your groceries without your back hurting. Picking up your kids without feeling stiff. Having the strength and endurance to do the things you love for years to come.

And that's where muscle enters the conversation.

THE THING WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT MORE

Whether you're taking a GLP-1, trying to lose weight naturally, or simply wanting to feel better in your body, the question should be:

"How do I preserve and build muscle while I do it?"

Because muscle is what supports your metabolism. Muscle is what helps you stay strong as you age. Muscle is what allows you to move well, recover better, and maintain independence later in life.

And unfortunately, muscle is also one of the first things people lose when they're focused solely on making the scale move. That's why resistance training, progressive overload, eating enough fiber, and coaching support matters.

And that's why we're always talking about strength.

THE LONG PLAY

At Core (LP), we don't care whether your goal is weight loss, building strength, improving mobility, feeling more confident, or simply having more energy throughout the day. Trust us, we can help you do any and all of these things with our pilates-inspired strength training programs.

But what we care about most is helping you build a body that functions well for the long play. A body that can hike, golf, lift, travel, chase kids, play sports, and keep up with life. A body that isn't just smaller, but stronger.

Because trends will continue to come and go.

The next diet will show up.
The next supplement will show up.

But muscle?

Muscle has never gone out of style.

And it never will.

Whether you're using a GLP-1 medication, focusing on nutrition, or simply looking to improve your health, building muscle through strength training remains one of the most effective ways to support long-term metabolic health, mobility, balance, and overall quality of life. If you're looking for a workout rooted in strength, mobility, progression, and coaching—we'd love to meet you.
