Is Reformer Pilates Hard?

The short answer?

It depends.

But probably not for the reason you're expecting.

Most people think "hard" means jumping, sprinting, burpees, or leaving class completely spent.

Pilates-inspired strength training is different.

Instead of asking your body to move faster, it asks your muscles to work longer.

And that's where things get interesting.

Slow Is Hard

Have you ever held a squat for 60 seconds? It doesn't look difficult, until you're the one doing it.

Pilates-inspired strength training uses slow, controlled movement to keep your muscles under tension longer than they're used to.

That means less momentum, more muscular endurance, and that shake that everyone talks about which is simply the muscle breaking down and building back stronger.

Those slow, tiny movements are exactly what make the workout feel so challenging.

The Shake Is Real

One of the first things beginners notice is the shaking.

Completely normal.

In fact, it's one of the reasons people fall in love with this workout and the feeling we always want to work towards.

Your muscles are working hard enough that your nervous system begins recruiting additional muscle fibers to keep producing force.

That's why your legs suddenly decide to vibrate.

Low Impact Doesn't Mean Easy

This is probably the biggest misconception.

People hear "low impact" and assume the workout will be easy.

Low impact simply means you're putting less stress on your joints.

It says nothing about how hard your muscles are working.

You can leave class sweating, shaking, and wondering how such small movements felt so intense—all without jumping once.

It Gets Easier...And Harder

Here's the funny thing.

The workout never really gets easier.

You get stronger.

As your strength improves, you'll progress to more advanced variations, different springs, and longer holds.

The challenge simply grows with you.
