Beat the Summer Slump: How to Stay Motivated in Your Fitness Routine

July is here and summer is in full swing. Sunshine, relaxation, and exciting adventures are on all our minds – which can also bring about a decline in motivation when it comes to maintaining a regular fitness routine.

Summer often brings unique challenges and excuses that can disrupt our fitness routine. Travel plans, social events, and the desire to simply unwind often pushes our workouts down to the bottom of our to-do list. Or simply changes to daily routines can disrupt our regular exercise habits, and make it tougher to pick up where we left off.

If you’re looking for ways to beat the summer slump and stay motivated on your fitness journey, we have some tips on how to ensure you make the most of the season while still prioritizing your long-play.

Recognize the Summer Slump

Do you find yourself skipping workouts more frequently in the summer? Are you struggling to muster the same level of enthusiasm you had just a few weeks ago? Is it extra tough to wake up to that early alarm to make it to class at 6:00 am? Acknowledging this shift in motivation without judgment is the first step towards regaining your focus and drive.

Set Clear Goals

One of the most effective ways to stay motivated year-round is to set clear and achievable fitness goals. If your motivation is waning, mix up your goals. Whether it's aiming for a certain number of workouts per week or leveling up that one move (Spoon + tricep dips, anyone?), having tangible goals helps maintain focus and provides a sense of purpose that will keep you dedicated to your workouts.

Plan Ahead

Look, we know you don’t want to live beholden to your calendar all summer – but planning and scheduling your workouts in advance is the best way to stay committed. By treating your workouts as important appointments, you're more likely to follow through.

Find Accountability and Support

Accountability plays a vital role in staying motivated. Bring a workout buddy to class (unlimited members can bring one friend per month for free – ask us how!), or get the gang together for a pre-brunch sweat session. Having someone to share the journey with can make a significant difference in maintaining consistency. Plus, it’s fun!

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential in the summer heat, and will support your energy levels and overall well-being – in turn making it easier to stay motivated and engaged in your workouts. Now is a perfect time to incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus fruits into your diet for an added delicious boost of hydration. And for our avid water drinkers, we have new Core (LP) water bottles in our store ;)
